Saving Our Tiny Colorful Friends
for the Coxen's Fig-Parrot
Critically EndangeredBy Lena, age 10
While looking through a list of endangered animals, the Coxen’s fig-parrot caught my attention the most. I had never heard of this bird before, so I wanted to learn more about it. When I saw its picture, I thought it looked very cute, colorful, and small. I was surprised to find out that this beautiful Australian bird is nearly extinct. I learned that they are in danger because people destroyed their forest homes to build cities and farms. Since many wild fig trees were cut down, they lost their food and places to live.I decided to draw three Coxen’s fig-parrots to show them together, like a little family living in the forest. While drawing, I imagined them sitting on branches, flying around trees, and looking for fruit to eat. It made me sad to think that these birds could disappear one day and people might not see them anymore. I realized how important it is to keep their homes safe. I chose these birds because they are new to me and fun to draw. I hope my drawing shows how cute and special these little birds are!
