Majestic Giants anchored in blue
for the Blue Whale
EndangeredBy Genevieve, age 12
This artwork captures a peaceful heartwarming moment beneath the waves, where a majestic blue whale family swim peacefully alongside their calves, cradled by the deep blue ocean. Soft golden rays from the rising sun filter through the water, beautiful yet fragile, symbolising hope that feels increasingly uncertain. The blue whale is endangered in Australia and faces threats from climate change, habitat degradation and human interference. Through this work, I hope to inspire awareness of the need to protect these magnificent creatures and the delicate ecosystems they call home. I explored an unconventional technique by creating a tapestry of closely connected bubbles with pen, evoking the synchronised movement of water. The whales were painted using wet-on-wet watercolour, allowing pigments to bleed and merge into galaxy-like swirls of blue and black. Let this fleeting moment of harmony be preserved for future generations to witness not in paintings or photographs, but in the wild. This stands not only as a tribute to their beauty and resilience but also as a quiet plea to safeguard our oceans, our whales and the world we share.
