Hidden in the Garden: A Community Mural Celebrating Australia’s Endangered Wildlife
for the Greater Glider
EndangeredGroup entry · Ages 8–10
Hidden in the Garden imagines the community garden as a shared ecosystem, where people, plants and native wildlife can grow together. Inspired by the seasonal vegetables surrounding the garden shed, the mural uses muted tones and layered shades of green rather than bright colours. This allows the artwork to blend naturally with the changing colours and textures of the garden throughout the year. Australian native animals—including the kangaroo, koala and greater glider—are hidden among the leaves, flowers and branches. Like a game of hide-and-seek, the mural invites us to slow down, look closely and discover the wildlife. By bringing endangered wildlife into an everyday community space, the mural reminds us that nature is not separate from our lives. It is part of our neighbourhood and our shared environment.
