Hidden Guardians of the Outback
for the Night Parrot
Critically EndangeredBy Angela, age 10
My artwork is inspired by the Australian Night Parrot, one of the world's rarest birds. For many years, people thought it might be extinct because it had not been seen for almost 100 years. Thankfully, a small number have been found living in the wild. Night parrots live only in Australia. Their green and yellow feathers help them hide among spinifex grass, where they build their nests and eat spinifex seeds. They stay hidden during the day and come out at night to feed. They face many dangers from snakes and predators such as feral cats and foxed. After reading about the night parrot, I was amazed that such a beautiful bird could stay hidden so long. I want to paint them resting safely in their desert home. My artwork reminds us that even animals we rarely see are still very important, and we all have a responsibility to care and protect our Australia's unique wildlife before it is too late.
