Flight of the Orange-bellied Parrot

for the Orange-bellied Parrot

Critically Endangered

By Amber, age 11

I was inspired by the Orange-bellied Parrot because it is such a colourful and incredibly rare Australian bird. I find it amazing that these tiny parrots make a long journey across Bass Strait between Tasmania and mainland Australia each year. In my painting, I used the sweeping wings, spread tail feathers and blurry, abstract background to create a sense of movement. I wanted to capture that brief moment as the parrot descends through the air, its wings stretched wide just before it lands.
